Exploring the Opportunity Atlas

Exploring the Opportunity Atlas is a series of videos that cover how the data from the Opportunity Atlas are sourced and interpreted, how to download and customize Atlas data and maps, and how to leverage this data to inform decision-making. These videos were developed in collaboration with What Works Cities, a Bloomberg Philanthropies initiative that helps cities use data and evidence to tackle their most pressing challenges.

For those interested in engaging with this content in a more structured and supportive environment, our recent online learning opportunity, “Exploring the Opportunity Atlas” has been adapted into a publicly available self-guided course within the Centers for Civic Impact at Johns Hopkins University GovEx Academy and will be available July 15th, 2021.

Module 1 lays the groundwork for better understanding all the components of the Opportunity Atlas by defining upward income mobility, explaining where the underlying data comes from, and highlighting what main outcomes are illustrated on the Atlas.

Video

MODULE 2: USING THE OPPORTUNITY ATLAS
Module 2 delves further into the functionality of the Atlas as a data tool. This video will show you how to define where, what, and who to visualize on the Atlas. It will also explain the difference between all the Outcomes and Neighborhood Characteristics represented, what the scaling options mean, and how they can be used to better visualize any given data.

Video

MODULE 3: EXPLORING NATIONAL PATTERNS ON THE LOCAL LEVEL
Module 3 illustrates how exploring different neighborhood characteristics can help explain differences in mobility. This Module also addresses questions around the relevancy of the Atlas’s longitudinal data, and why data can sometimes paint an insufficient picture and supplementing with local knowledge is key.

Video

MODULE 4: CASE STUDY FOR USING THE ATLAS FOR LOCAL HOUSING POLICY
Module 4 shows you a real-world example of how local government workers, researchers, and nonprofit organizations in Seattle, Washington used the Opportunity Atlas and its data to help inform and support a local housing policy pilot program.
